BSD Software was established in June 1986 as a software development company specializing in system utility and database application software for commercial publication. Through the late 1980's and early 1990's over twenty commercial software titles were published by Free Spirit Software with over two hundred and fifty thousand copies sold. In 1988, the Commodore Amiga graphic file utility Ultra DOS Utilities won the 1988 Consumer Electronics Show Award of Merit for Innovative Software.

As the IBM PC and clone computers emerged as the undisputed leader in business systems in the early 1990's, BSD Software shifted focus to contract software development and systems analysis and consulting with emphasis on database applications, data conversions, Microsoft and Unix operating systems and desktop computers and file servers.
